Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

Latest from the National Lottery...

"Before contacting your ISP may I suggest disconnecting your ADSL connection for a minimum of 10 minutes and then reconnect. This will release the current IP address and gain a new one."

How quaint - they think I have ADSL and that it is a dynamic IP address.
LOL LOL LOL

So, latest email to ICO:-

Further to my previous email on this matter...

I am now having issues specifically with National Lottery (Camelot) regarding personal information they have relating to me.

They have confirmed that they believe I am in Germany!

They have deduced that my IP 91.240.176.1 is in Germany. I have advised them of their error. The IP address is in Bracknell, UK.

I have advised them of the direct association of an identifiable living UK individual (myself) with this IP address, which is one of my IPs assigned to me by RIPE (i.e. not my ISPs IP address, *mine*).

This is therefore personal information, and it is incorrect.

I have formally requested that they correct this erroneous personal information as the data subject under the DPA, and they are refusing to do so.

What can be done?

  1. The ICO must see your email address and say "oh no, not him again"

  2. Interesting - I wonder where the National Lottery is getting it's DB from.

Maxmind (the most popular/commonly known ip2country db) gives no results: http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_demo_ip?ips=91.240.176.1

http://www.hostip.info/ says it hasn't a clue (but does resolve the hostname to an aa.net.uk address)
    http://ip2country.hackers.lv/ = no results
    http://www.ip2location.com/ and http://www.iplocation.net/ = both say "UK"
    http://www.ip2nation.com/ = says "Russia"
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/91.240.176.1 = Knows the hostname and that it is a static IP on broadband, but no country info.
http://ip-lookup.net/index.php?ip=91.240.176.1 (which uses the http://ip-to-country.webhosting.info/ database) says "UK".

Where the h-ll are they getting Germany from?

    1. Nice... Russia eh! Clearly something says Germany somehow, and I am seeing adverts for New York stuff now.

  3. Did you get this sorted? Some of BEs IP ranges (the new network?) seem to be affected by this "fun" and nobody seems to be getting instructions on how to correct it.

    1. Well one of the geolocation companies decided I was in Westminster, which works well enough, but there seems no "proper" way to fix this. It is separate companies selling services to separate web sites and ignoring the proper registry.

Fencing

Bit of fun... We usually put up some Christmas lights on the house - some fairy lights on the metal fencing at the front, but a pain as mean...
