Just got "popcorn chicken" from KFC.
TBH it was OK, much like chicken nuggets from MacD, but smaller, and I found some BBQ sauce.
But why "popcorn"?
It seems to have no popcorn, or corn in any way in it?
Why are foods allowed to be sold with such misleading descriptions?
/me assumes he is getting old and turning in to Victor Meldrew.

It's because the pieces are meant to resemble bits of popcorn. This has been available for at least a decade - I can't possibly believe you've never come across this before.
ReplyDeleteI have vaguely heard the term, but, quite sensibly, assumed it had some connection to popcorn. I can get salted popcorn, buttered popcorn, why not popcorn chicken?
DeleteQuick, sue Cadburys, I just found out their "Creme Eggs" aren't made from eggs! :)
ReplyDeleteWHAT?! this is an outrage!
DeleteI see what you did there, but I really think "egg" is much more general than "bird egg", and at least they are egg shaped. The popcorn chicken is not the shape or size of popcorn, or made form popcorn, or even popped in any way. Show someone a creme egg and ask "is that an egg?" and they will say "yes", or "yes, a chocolate egg", etc. Show them a small bit of breaded chicken and ask is it popcorn? I think not.
DeleteWith 'Creme Egg', 'creme' is the adjective and 'egg' is the noun, so it is an egg.
DeleteWith 'Popcorn Chicken', 'popcorn' is the adjective and 'chicken' is the noun. So it is clearly supposed to be chicken that has some of the qualities of popcorn, not the other way round!
I don't belieeeve it!
DeleteBut it comes in a popcorn box doesn't it? :D
ReplyDeleteI've heard the term but always assumed it tasted like popcorn or something, so never considered actually ordering it as it sounds hideous..
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty horrendous - way to sell the scraps of chicken that are too small to be "nuggets". But indeed, when I first heard the term I really assumed it somehow had some connection to popcorn in some way. The closest is (as above) that the box it comes in it a bit like an extra extra small popcorn style box, maybe.
DeleteThe chicken bits is likely to be "mechanically reclaimed meat" which can't be legally be called meat... and as McDo chicken only contain 45% of chicken (http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ukhome/product_nutrition.chicken.26.20-chicken-mcnuggets-sharebox.html) and lots of Starches, Modified Starch and Dried Glucose Syrup, all of those likely to be corn....
ReplyDeleteSo probably as much corn as chicken in it.
