Nothing seems to use the phonetic alphabet. Have you got something that accepts it RevK?

Seriously, if it accepted the phonetic alphabet, almost nobody but you would notice, and people who *had* e.g. 'oscar' in their password would get annoyed :( but holy hell is that ever a terrible UI: every part of it is wrong.

Slightly missing the point - this is to "spell" a password. It does not allow normal words like dictation (odd that it picks up some brands then). So your password being oscar would not allow you to say "oscar", you have to say "oh ess see aye arr" now. So nobody would have a problem with phonetic alphabet and they could add UK and US at the same time with no problem even.
DeleteI was assuming from the brand-spelling thing that you could say arbitrary words and it would recognize them. Only brand names?! How bizarre.
Deleteindeed, it is crazy, but as you see it did not actually put the phonetic alphabet words or pretty much any others that I said. Only those that are the name of a letter (and things like "dot" and "capital") plus some brand names!
DeleteI use the dictation thing on my Apple TV 4th Gen and it just works using normal "a" "b" if you want to do letters, it's also pretty good with words for me. It's about the only time I use speech dictation on anything, mostly because as you point out (and I do agree with) the stupid remote is a classic but increasingly common example of Apple completely forgetting ease of use and reliability in the expected behaviour in favour of bling.
DeleteAlso, I certainly don't have to provide the Apple ID password constantly, in fact I can't remember barring first setup ever doing so.
Does it ask if you buy something? I think the never ask password in settings and iTunes account is only purchases?

DeleteMaybe not a perfect answer but try the remote app on the iphone. Cursor (trackpad) and keyboard. Works quite well really.

ReplyDeleteThis is like an advert for piracy, Plex has a much better interface, and when used with Sonarr, Couchpotato, and PlexDVR it can automatically get/record ota all your shows.
Combine with a Firestick or a Chromecast and it seems a much better solution... for free.
No offence Adrian but you maybe want to do something about the angle of the camera as it makes you look like a basement dweller with a shotgun just out of view ;)

ReplyDeleteBtw is it possible that parental controls got put on - or something similar in settings got SNAFUd? That could be why it's prompting you for passwords all the time?

DeleteWhat is left then? A test with a different new Apple ID ? After a wipe of the Apple TV itself.
ReplyDeleteMy suspicion is that you've misstepped somewhere with the account / administrative level account / restrictions and it's behaving correctly requesting authorisation. In itunes accounts review your account, additional IDs, the ones being used, restrictions in force, etc.

Bizarre that the factory reset hasn't solved things.
In the meantime, use the 'remote' app on your phone. Whenever you're in a text field on the Apple TV, it will pop up the actual keyboard on your phone so you can type quickly and see what's going on.
